YOUR GEAR: Yoga Props & Exercise Equipment
With the states starting to re-open, fitness centers are putting safety measures into place for in-person classes. If you are thinking about returning to a fitness center for yoga, meditation, and/or exercise classes, I suggest that you consider getting some of your own equipment, especially if you have safety concerns.
Experts agree it’s very challenging for the centers to sanitize the equipment and props. My goal here is to provide alternative choices that may help YOU keep safe and therefore more comfortable.
Priority Suggestions:
Yoga mats
Can be purchased for as little as $15. A standard size mat is 24 x 68 inches. If you would like to invest a little more, you can purchase a slightly bigger size, making it easier to stay on your mat.
Yoga blocks
Blocks come in 2 sizes, 3 or 4 inches with prices starting about $10 each. If you are ordering blocks, get two. When determining which size to purchase, consider the size of your hand. It’s easier to grip a 3-inch block. If you often sit on your blocks, the 4-inch size is better. Otherwise, I suggest you start with the 3-inch size.
A 6-foot yoga strap
This is another prop you might find useful. I prefer a D-ring strap. It’s easy to adjust, and the buckle usually doesn’t break. Other straps that have plastic buckles crack over time. The purchase price is about $8.
Resistance Band & Dumbbell’s
For exercise classes, consider getting a resistance band and a pair of dumbbell.
I recommend purchasing two different weights. They are available in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 lbs. Resistance bands often come in a bundle with a variety of strengths.
If you decide to attend online classes, some of the recommended items are optional but can enhance your experience. (For my online yoga and meditation classes, you only need a mat. Having other props is optional.)
The Choice is Yours

All of these items may be purchased online. Also, many local stores have these items available. Target and Walmart are good options to buy most of the above items if you are on a budget.
