How often do you think about what it takes to live a healthy life?

Many of us just “put one foot in front of the other” each day hoping to make it through that day. Then repeat it the next day, too busy to change much. Some of us just do what our parents taught us. And they did what their parents taught them.

Here’s some research that might get you thinking about health and wellness:

20% of one’s health is affected by their genes and 20% by the healthcare they receive. That leaves 60% which is influenced by the lifestyle choices they make.

I compiled a list of topics from the best sources that influence health. Many of the choices have been discussed so much over the last few years that you’re probably familiar with most of them.

Here’s an updated list:

  • Do you smoke or are you frequently around people who smoke?
  • How much alcohol do you consume?
  • Do you exercise regularly?
  • Is exercise or movement built into your daily life or has technology taken over?
  • How much time do you spend sitting?
  • Do you work long hours? Is ‘work’ the main focus of your life?
  • How much stress is in your life? How do you cope with your stress?
  • Do you meditate, pray or schedule quiet time daily?
  • How much do you sleep?
  • Do you eat a healthy diet?
  • Do you volunteer?
  • Do you have a social network? How important is your family?
  • What’s your purpose in life?
  • Do you live in the present moment or do you live in the past?
  • How often do you feel grateful?

I’ll be discussing many of these topics in upcoming articles, giving food for thought along with some suggestions. Then you can decide what changes you want to make in your life so that you can live a healthier and happier life.

Spoiler alert: The new word for a long healthy life is ‘healthspan.’

Let me know what’s on your list. You can email me privately or post it on Facebook.
