Benefits of Living in the Present

Do You Live In the Present Moment or Do You Live in the Past?

I have an acquaintance who always says, “if only … this happened differently, or that had not occurred ….” about the past.

We can’t change the past.

We can only learn from it and go on.  When we live in the past, wishing it were different or continuously going over events that happened, we are taking away from today.  We might even be causing ourselves more stress.

Living in the present is healthier and less stressful

Being present helps you connect with yourself, more mindful, and happier.  Our ability to cope with whatever life throws our way is improved.

Here are some techniques that might be helpful:

  1. Take a few deep breaths.
  2. Meditate letting go of what no longer serves you.
  3. Focus on being grateful.
  4. Try journaling. Write about what is on your mind.
  5. Do a body scan. Start at the top of the head, working your way down to the toes.
  6. Re-imagine the past by closing your eyes and visualize, with another outcome, whatever you are stuck on.
These techniques will help clear your mind of what no longer serves you – – and refocus your mind to the present moment.

Live life in the present moment, not the past.
