A Peek Behind the Scenes of a Private Yoga Session
Have you ever wondered what it’s like in a private yoga session?
Whether you’ve been dying of curiosity or this is the first time you’ve even heard of such a thing, I’m going to give you a sneak peek behind the scenes of what it’s like to have a private yoga session with me.
Remember people-watching? The way we used to fill up time before smartphones took over the world
Observation is Education
Observing how people move, sit, and stand is an education in itself. You can learn a lot when you know what to look for: imbalances in the body, how one side of the body moves versus the other, movement patterns, and habits. Even slight differences in your body can make a big difference in your experience of strength, flexibility, and ease.
Initial Assessment with Guided Movements
When you arrive at your first private yoga session, you will complete an intake form. Our first few minutes together will be spent going over that information, and I may ask you a few follow-up questions to help me decide how to begin helping you.
When I am confident that we are on the same page about your challenges and goals, I will guide you through some simple movements and initiate my people-watching skills. As I watch, it is with gentle eyes and positive intent – my only goal is to help you live better in your body.
Determining the Origins
Questions instinctively cross my mind: how did you develop your particular patterns or habits. There can be many reasons: were you born that way? Were you injured? Was there not enough movement in your life? Sometimes the answer is quite simply the type of shoes you wore for several decades.
A Personalized Plan
After determining reasonable possibilities, I explore in my mind what would be the best courses of action to help you improve. That might be yoga or some other movement technique, or a combination of methods. In some situations, daily stresses may be causing so much tension that you might need to learn to relax before learning other techniques.
My mind then moves on to imagine the likely outcomes that you can expect and how your life could be improved in the future.
Improvement is possible
There is almost always room for improvement. I know this from personal experience. Two life-changing falls left me with so much pain that I could not sleep or move much. For a time, I lost hope that I would ever live without pain. Then, I started to learn about anatomy, biomechanics, and movement, and I learned that there is always hope for a richer and more satisfying life.
My life’s biggest joy (aside from my grandchildren) is playing a detective, trying to figure out what my client is struggling with and why. It doesn’t matter if it’s back pain, mobility challenges, or range of motion restrictions – – it’s my job to determine the solution for improvement.
Final Steps & Follow-up
After discussing my observations and recommendations, the two of us agree on a customized action plan.
As we walk together through this process of improving your health and well-being, I will check in with you at the beginning of each subsequent session. Each session begins with a brief discussion on how you are doing. The plan is fine-tuned and modified along the way based on what is most effective for you and your circumstances.
Dedication to Your Success
All of my in-depth training, extensive teaching experience, and personal journey of overcoming are at your service to help you improve your quality of life. Whether you wish to reduce pain, play easily with your grandchildren, or continue improving your game of golf, I am here for you as an advisor and guide.
I will continue to be curious, researching, and learning in my non-teaching hours so that I can better serve my client’s needs.
And yes, I continue to always “people watch.”
