<p>Vitamin D gets called the “sunshine vitamin” for good reason. But when it comes to vitamin D and back pain, the research shows a more nuanced story. While deficiency has been linked with chronic low back pain and musculoskeletal discomfort, supplementation alone is not a guaranteed cure. Instead, vitamin D plays a supportive role in bone strength, muscle function, and overall spine health — making it one important piece of a broader wellness toolkit.</p>
<p>Let’s walk through what we do know from current research, what’s still unclear, and how to support your back (and whole body) with smart vitamin D habits.</p>
<h2>Vitamin D Deficiency and Back Pain: What Studies Show</h2>
<p>Here’s the short answer. Vitamin D is important for spine and muscle health, but it’s not a magic bullet for back pain.</p>
<p>Several studies have found that people with chronic low back pain are more likely to have low vitamin D levels. A 2019 review reported an association between vitamin D deficiency and low back pain, especially in people with very low levels. More recent work in 2025 also notes that low vitamin D is linked with musculoskeletal pain and chronic lower back pain, suggesting that deficiency may make the body more vulnerable to persistent pain.</p>
<h2>Does Supplementation Help? Mixed Results From Research</h2>
<p>When researchers give vitamin D supplements and test whether pain improves, the results are mixed. A 2024 primary care study found that vitamin D supplementation had only minimal to modest benefit for low back pain, even in people who were deficient. Other chronic pain research suggests that correcting a clear deficiency can help with pain in some people, but it’s not consistently dramatic or universal.</p>
<h2>How Vitamin D Supports Spine and Muscle Health</h2>
<h3>The research suggests:</h3>
<ul>
<li>Vitamin D deficiency may increase the risk or intensity of back pain.</li>
<li>Correcting a deficiency can help some people, but vitamin D alone is unlikely to “cure” back pain.</li>
<li>Movement, strength, posture, sleep, mood, and stress still play huge roles.</li>
<li>Think of vitamin D as one part of your wellness toolkit—not the only star.</li>
</ul>
<h2>How Vitamin D Gets Into Your Body</h2>
<p>Vitamin D does not get absorbed into the skin and bones directly. Your body has a whole activation pathway for it. You get vitamin D from sun + food + supplements → your liver stores it → your kidneys activate it → your bones, muscles, and immune system use it.</p>
<h2>Vitamin D as Part of a Back Health Toolkit</h2>
<p>Adequate vitamin D levels does not guarantee a pain-free back. However, vitamin D supports several systems that matter a lot for spine health and comfort.</p>
<h3>1. Bone Strength and Spinal Integrity</h3>
<p>Vitamin D improves calcium absorption and helps prevent osteoporosis.</p>
<p>Your vertebrae and the joints around them are constantly remodeling. Inadequate vitamin D over time can contribute to weaker bones and may increase the risk of osteoporotic fractures, including vertebral fractures that can cause or worsen back pain.</p>
<p>That said, large trials in generally well-nourished adults have found that extra vitamin D beyond the usual recommended daily intake does not significantly reduce fractures when given broadly to everyone.</p>
<h3>2. Muscle Function and Falls</h3>
<p>Vitamin D receptors are found in skeletal muscle, and deficiency has been linked with muscle weakness, poor balance, and a higher risk of falls</p>
<p>Falls can lead to spinal compression fractures and increase existing back pain.</p>
<p><strong>In simple terms</strong>: adequate vitamin D is part of the foundation for strong, responsive muscles—which indirectly supports a safer, more stable spine.</p>
<h3>3. Pain Processing and Inflammation</h3>
<p>Emerging research suggests that low vitamin D may be associated with chronic musculoskeletal pain and increase pain sensitivity.</p>
<p>Always talk to your healthcare provider before starting high-dose supplements, especially if you have other medical conditions or take multiple medications.</p>
<h2>Practical Habits for Spine Comfort and Overall Wellness</h2>
<h3>For back comfort and overall good health, vitamin D works best alongside:</h3>
<ul>
<li>Gentle, regular movement</li>
<li>Core and hip strengthening</li>
<li>Balance training</li>
<li>Good sleep and stress management</li>
</ul>
<p>Vitamin D is part of building stronger bones, better muscle function, and resilience over time—not an instant pain reliever.</p>
<h2>The Bottom Line on Vitamin D and Back Pain</h2>
<p>Before you grab your beach blanket for sun bathing remember vitamin D alone probably won’t prevent all back pain. Keeping your levels in a healthy range is an important foundation for your overall health including bone strength, muscle function, balance, and pain resilience. Pair that with smart movement, posture awareness, and a calm nervous system, and you’re giving your back a far better chance to stay strong and supported.</p></div>

While we understand the benefits of <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/you-are-what-you-eat/">healthier eating</a>, <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/staying-motivated-exercise/">regular exercise</a>, <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/improve-quality-sleep/">adequate sleep</a>, and <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/identify-reduce-negative-stress/">stress management</a>, implementing these changes presents a significant hurdle.</p>
<h2>Understanding Our Resistance</h2>
<p>Our brains naturally gravitate toward routine and familiarity as safety mechanisms. Even when current habits negatively impact our wellbeing—whether it&#8217;s <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/weekly-exercise-needs/">neglecting exercise</a>, <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/you-are-what-you-eat/">consuming unhealthy foods</a>, or maintaining poor sleep patterns—we often prefer the comfort of known behaviors over venturing into unfamiliar territory. When life&#8217;s demands already feel overwhelming, the additional effort required for change can seem insurmountable.</p>
<h2>The Anxiety of Change</h2>
<p>Anxiety plays a crucial role in our resistance to change. According to Dr. Joe Dispenza, renowned neuroscientist and author, our brains are wired to maintain homeostasis—a state of physiological and psychological equilibrium. When we attempt to break established patterns, our brain interprets this disruption as a potential threat, triggering anxiety as a protective mechanism.</p>
<h2>The Addiction of Current Emotional States</h2>
<p>In his research, Dr. Dispenza explains that we become &#8220;addicted&#8221; to our emotional states. Our repeated thought patterns create neural networks that release specific neurochemicals, and our bodies become accustomed to these chemical states. When we try to change, we experience what he calls &#8220;withdrawal symptoms&#8221; from these familiar emotional chemicals, manifesting as anxiety, discomfort, or even fear.</p>
<p>&#8220;The hardest part about change is not making the same choices you made the day before,&#8221; Dr. Dispenza notes. This biological resistance creates a gap between our intellectual desire for change and our emotional readiness to embrace it. Our anxiety about the unknown—what Dr. Dispenza calls the &#8220;chemical unknown&#8221;—often drives us back to familiar patterns, even when we consciously know they don&#8217;t serve us.</p>
<p>Fortunately, effective change doesn&#8217;t necessitate dramatic shifts. Consistent, minor adjustments can yield substantial health improvements over time.</p>
<h2>The Effectiveness of Incremental Change</h2>
<p>Rather than viewing change as an absolute transformation, consider approaching it as a series of gradual modifications:</p>
<ul>
<li>Add just one additional vegetable serving to your daily meals instead of completely restructuring your diet</li>
<li>Begin with <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/health-benefits-movement/">10 minutes of physical activity</a> rather than committing to lengthy workout sessions</li>
<li>Adjust your bedtime by 15 minutes earlier instead of immediately targeting eight hours of sleep</li>
</ul>
<p>These modest beginnings may initially seem insignificant, but they accumulate meaningfully. As these small changes become habitual, they integrate seamlessly into your routine, eliminating the struggle previously associated with them.</p>
<h2>Strategies for Successful Change</h2>
<ol>
<li><strong>Simplify Your Start</strong> – Focus on a single modest change rather than attempting multiple simultaneous adjustments.</li>
<li><strong>Personalize Your Approach</strong> – Select changes aligned with your specific circumstances and objectives instead of following prescribed “shoulds.&#8221;</li>
<li><strong>Monitor Your Journey</strong> – Utilize simple tracking methods to maintain focus and acknowledge achievements.</li>
<li><strong>Practice Self-Compassion</strong> – Recognize that change isn&#8217;t about flawlessness; resume your efforts following any setbacks.</li>
<li><strong>Cultivate a Support System</strong> – Engage friends, mentors, or communities for motivation and accountability. Consult a professional for guidance.</li>
</ol>
<p>When contemplating whether to change, embrace the affirmative—but acknowledge that comprehensive transformation doesn&#8217;t happen overnight. Begin with small steps today, recognizing that these incremental changes ultimately lead to significant personal evolution.</p>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><p>It was August 21, 2004. The place was Athens, Greece, the birthplace of the Olympic Games.</p>
<p>During the 2004 Olympics, the US softball team crushed the competition with a score of 51-1. Birgit Fischer, a German kayaker, was the first Olympian to win 2 medals in five different games. On the other hand, the US men’s basketball team defeated by Argentina won the Bronze medal.</p>
<p>Michael Phelps, a swimmer on the US team, was intent on breaking the record set by Mark Spitz, who won 7 Olympic Medals in one year. Having already won seven metals, Phelps began the race knowing this final race was his opportunity to set a new record.</p>
<p>After the swimmers started racing, Phelps noticed that his goggles were leaking water, making it impossible for him to see. That would slow down most swimmers and, for most competitors, make it difficult for them to win any race.</p>
<p>However, Michael Phelps had a secret weapon. Phelps’ coach designed his training sessions to plan for every possibility, including counting strokes while swimming with water-filled goggles. Practice gave Phelps the edge he needed to win his eighth medal in one Olympics. Michael Phelps now has a total of 28 Olympic medals.</p>
<p>You may not be interested in competing in the Olympics; however, planning for every possibility is beneficial for everyone as we navigate life, especially regarding our health. <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/correcting-bad-habits/">Good habits</a> also help. Phelps could not have achieved this level of success if he skipped regular practice or did not follow the best training advice available to him.</p>
<p>Phelps said that he “never thought about failing” and “trained his mind to think about success.” You, too, can train for your wellness race. There may be bumps in the road, but by preparing for possibilities and keeping a positive attitude, you can succeed in your journey toward optimal health.</p>

<li>Stay hydrated</li>

<li><a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/reduce-stress/">Reduce stress</a></li>
<li><a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/sitting-bad/">Sit less</a> and <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/health-benefits-movement/">move more</a></li>
<li>Visualize success</li>
<li>Never give up!</li>
</ul>
<p>Whatever bumps you may encounter along the way, you will know that you have the best chance for success in your wellness race.</p>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><p>We’ve all had them.  Leg cramps or “charley horses,“ as they are commonly known, can occur out of nowhere.  They can be mild or intense.  You may experience them during the day or when they keep you awake at night.</p>
<h2>The origin of the name Charlie Horse</h2>
<p>Leg cramps were named after Charlie “Hoss” Radborn, a famous baseball player from the 1880s who reportedly had frequent leg cramps.</p>
<h2>What is a charlie horse exactly?</h2>
<p>A leg cramp is a sudden, involuntary muscle spasm.  Most “charley horses” occur in the calf muscles.  You might notice a twitching or a lump.  These symptoms are usually temporary.</p>
<p>Leg cramps often happen when a muscle in the leg shortens, causing a sudden pain making it hard to move.  Tendons connect your muscles to your bones, shorten as you get older.  </p>
<h2>What can trigger a charlie horse?</h2>
<p>Exercise can also be a trigger, especially if you exercise outside in hot weather or for an extended period.  Muscles that are tired and dehydrated are more likely to cramp.  In addition, overuse of a muscle, muscle strain, or simply holding a position for a prolonged period may cause a muscle cramp.</p>
<p><a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/sitting-bad/">Sitting for long periods</a> and <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/does-standing-cause-back-pain/">standing on concrete floors</a> may also lead to muscle cramps. </p>
<p>Some medications, such as cholesterol medications, may increase the likelihood of cramps.   <i>Low magnesium and potassium levels </i>also may cause cramping.</p>
<h2>How to help prevent a charlie horse</h2>
<p>Prevention is simple.  Stay hydrated.  Always have water available when exercising outside or going to a movement class.  Second, <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/you-are-what-you-eat/">eat a healthy diet</a> with plenty of green leafy vegetables.  Kale, spinach, collard greens, turnip greens, and mustard greens contain significant magnesium.  White beans, lentils, sweet potatoes, beets, parsnips, spinach, swiss chard, bananas, and avocados contain important potassium.</p>
<p><a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/benefits-daily-stretching/">Increasing your flexibility</a> may help.  Remember to <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/importance-of-stretching/">stretch, especially after exercising</a>.  If you experience legs cramps at night, trying stretching before bed.  I find <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/hamstring-muscles-strengthen-stretch/">stretching my calf muscles</a> before retiring to be extremely helpful.</p>
<p>Warm-up before exercising with a <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/dynamic-static-stretching/">few stretches</a> or <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/proper-walking-techniques/">walk at a slow pace</a>.</p>
<p>When you experience a leg cramp, massaging or stretching the affected area helps to reduce the tightness and pain.  Warm compresses loosen the muscle. Take note of what you were doing when the muscle cramp started.  This might give you a clue as to the source of the muscle cramping.</p>
<p>Bottom Line: Muscle cramps are usually harmless and can be treated with additional self-care.  If you have prolonged or frequent muscle cramps, consult your medical doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions.</p></div>

<p>For three days, I have participated in a marathon workshop about the latest marketing trends. Yes, daily.  I help people improve their health and wellness, but if I don’t share the information with you in a way that gets your attention, it doesn’t have a chance to be helpful.  One reoccurring theme of this workshop is action, right here and right now.  As each concept or trend is discussed, we each invest the time to draft how we will use it.  Then different people from the audience are selected to practice with the presenter.  This rehearsal helps our brain retain the information for better recall after the workshop ends.</p></div>
			</div><div class="et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_38  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light">
				
				
				
				
				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><h2>Making the right choice isn&#8217;t simple</h2>
<p>Information and action go together.  It’s just that simple, except that YOU and I both know that it is not that simple.  Life gets in the way.  So do <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/break-habits-routines/">habits and excuses</a>.  You know what I mean — the “I will do it next week” or “but I always do this, not that” or “it probably will not make a difference in my day-to-day.”</p>
<p>Change is hard, but so are pain, poor health, and <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/correcting-bad-habits/">bad habits</a>.  It is just more comfortable to keep doing what you have been doing.</p></div>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><h2>Covid-19 is changing the health and wellness perspective of many</h2>
<p>Next week I will attend a global summit on how current events have reshaped wellness.  The discussion will be about how disruptive changes (Covid-19) will lead to integrative health.  To be clear, traditional medicine has not always been receptive to other methods such as <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/meditation-reduce-stress-pain/">meditation</a>, <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/why-practice-yoga/">yoga</a>, acupuncture, <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/you-are-what-you-eat/">homeopathic remedies</a>, and the like.</p>
<p>As more scientific studies are conducted reporting the benefits of non-traditional therapies, the medical professionals understand that they don’t have all the answers.  For example: with Covid-19, the healthier you are, the better your chances are of navigating through an incident with minimal complications.  The virus is mostly a respiratory condition.  If you are <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/breathe-your-way-to-health/">a healthy breather</a>, you may be able to get enough oxygen in your lungs to support your body during this disease.</p></div>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><h2>A primary difference between traditional medicine and alternative therapies</h2>
<p>Many of the non-traditional methods emphasize breathing.  When was the last time your medical doctor encouraged you to practice breathing techniques?  This is just one example of how you can avail yourself of more help just by practicing <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/health-benefits-movement/">movement</a>, <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/how-yoga-improves-awareness/">yoga</a>, and <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/meditation-reduce-stress-pain/">meditation</a>.</p>
<p>Many are starting to realize that traditional medicine usually treats the health condition only after it has developed.  <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/what-affects-health-wellness/">Meditation, yoga, and other methods help with treating wellness issues</a> and may help prevent health issues in the first place.</p></div>

<p>The future will likely blend traditional medicine and non-traditional techniques like yoga, meditation, tai chi, etc.  Take the first step and <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/virtual-yoga-meditation-class-schedule/">try a few classes</a>.  You too may experience <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/lifestyle-change/">improved health</a> when you incorporate both into your wellness plan.  When that happens, it will reinforce what you already know — that making changes to your wellness plan by taking time for self-care will help prevent a decline in your wellness and improve your health starting right now.</p>

<p>At age 43, Football Legend Tom Brady just won his 7th Super Bowl.  Currently, he is the oldest quarterback that is still playing.  In fact, Brady wants to continue playing for another two seasons.</p>
<p>You might be wondering:  &#8220;Just how does he do it?&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, a proper diet is top on his list, followed by a daily exercise regimen.</p>
<p>Brady says he consumes large amounts of water daily.  Everyone needs to stay hydrated because our bodies consist mostly of water.  Our tissues and organs need water to be healthy.  Besides, <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/fascia-and-why-it-can-cause-pain/">the fascia</a> needs water to be able to slide and glide as we move.</p></div>

<h3>Here&#8217;s a peek into his mostly plant-based diet:</h3>
<ul>
<li>80% of his diet is organic vegetables.</li>
<li>20% is grass-fed organic lean meats, chicken, and wild salmon.</li>
<li>Whole grains consist of brown rice, quinoa, millet, and beans.</li>
<li>No nightshade vegetables, tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms or eggplant (because they are known to be inflammatory).</li>
<li>No white sugar, white flour, caffeine, coffee, dairy or MSG.</li>
<li>Only olive oil with coconut oil for cooking.</li>
<li>Consumption of fruit is limited.</li>
<li>Snacks are seeds and nuts along with hummus or guacamole.</li>
<li>Himalayan pink salt replaces iodized salt.</li>
<li>Bone broth often rounds out his diet.</li>
</ul>
<p>You might, at this point, be thinking that&#8217;s a big list, but there are MORE guidelines.</p></div>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><h2>Don&#8217;t forget or dismiss the importance of fitness</h2>
<p>Next on Brady&#8217;s list is his <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/do-we-need-cardio-workouts/">fitness routine</a>.  Of course, he has a personal trainer.  The workouts begin with a short deep-tissue massage followed by <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/exercises-for-bone-health/">exercises</a> with resistance bands, then comes <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/hamstring-muscles-strengthen-stretch/">lunges, squats, and planks</a>.  Also, he practices throwing a football.</p>
<p>Approximately half of his exercise time is spent on <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/why-practice-yoga/">strength and conditioning</a>.  More than half is spent on <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/importance-of-stretching/">pliability sessions</a>, either using a foam roller or being stretched manually.  Proper <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/posture-awareness-better-health/">form and body alignment</a> are important parts of Tom’s fitness routine.</p></div>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><h2>All success starts with goals, action, commitment, and consistency.</h2>
<p>No professional athlete could achieve their status without this success map.</p>
<p><strong>You don&#8217;t need to be a professional athlete to implement their strategies or to win at the wellness game.</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Start with <a href="_wp_link_placeholder" data-wplink-edit="true">setting your goals</a>; mapping out the steps to get there; then, start implementing.</li>
<li>Take small steps every day.</li>
<li>Don&#8217;t expect to be perfect. (Even Tom Brady says he eats pizza once in a while!)</li>
</ol>
<p>Failure to implement and stay committed is one of the biggest reasons that some never reach their goals.  Setting unrealistic goals is another reason.</p></div>

<li>Start by setting a realistic goal but with a bit of a stretch.</li>

<li>Once you reach it, you can set another goal.</li>
<li>Continue to celebrate each goal attained!</li>
<li>Don&#8217;t let small setbacks discourage you from your goals.  The road to success is rarely a straight path.</li>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><h2>Almost anyone can get a headache from time to time</h2>
<p>It is estimated that 80 to 90 percent of the population suffers from tension headaches (the most common type) at least some time in their lives. According to the World Health Organization, up to 1 adult in 20 has a headache every day or nearly every day.</p>
<p>Interestingly, women experience more headaches than men.  It is thought that fluctuating hormone levels in women could be responsible.</p></div>
			</div><div class="et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_57  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light">
				
				
				
				
				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><h2>There are three common types of headaches:</h2>
<h3>Cluster Headaches</h3>
<p>These typically feel like a stabbing pain in the eyes. They can last for hours or a few minutes and can go away only to return on the same day.</p>
<h3>Migraines</h3>
<p>With migraines, the pain throbs and pounds on the side of the head. Many victims become sensitive to light and need to lay down in a dark room. Migraines can last for days or only a few hours.</p>
<h3>Tension Headaches</h3>
<p>These are another common type. Usually, they start in the afternoon, feeling like a band of pressure that causes mild to moderate pain. Tension in the neck and shoulders might be the cause. If you experience tension headaches regularly, it might be time to determine what is causing the pain.</p></div>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><h2>Common Causes of Headaches</h2>
<p>Both tension headaches and migraines may be caused by neck pain and stiffness.  The resulting tight muscles can affect muscles in the face, such as the jaw, forehead, and eyes, leading to headaches.</p></div>
			</div><div class="et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_59  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light">
				
				
				
				
				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><h2>How to Manage an Existing Headache and Ways to Avoid Future Ones</h2>
<h3>Your first steps to control the headaches would be to:</h3>
<h4>Keep a Journal</h4>
<p>Note the time of day when you get a headache, what you were doing, and your location.  If you are working at a computer, <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/sitting-bad/">notice how you are sitting</a>, whether your shoulders are tight, and your head&#8217;s position.</p>
<h4>Assess Your Stress Level</h4>
<p>For many people, the shoulders and neck get tighter as their <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/identify-reduce-negative-stress/">stress level rises</a>.  Meditation helps reduce stress. Also, guided imagery can help relax the body and the mind.  <strong>Are you unconsciously tensing your muscles?  </strong>Clenching your teeth, squinting, or tensing the muscles in the face can also cause headaches.  Make sure you have enough light so that you are not straining your eyes to see during your daily activities.</p>
<p>Stress is a significant factor in tight muscles.  Often the trapezius muscles are tight.  The brain often interrupts neck and shoulder pain as a headache.  Stress is also a significant cause of migraine headaches.</p>
<h4>Check the position of your shoulders</h4>
<p>Notice if one shoulder is higher or more forward than the other.  Try stretching out your shoulder and neck muscles.</p>
<h4>Do You Have Neck Stiffness or Pain?</h4>
<p>You might come to discover that your neck could be causing your headaches.  When headaches accompany <a href="_wp_link_placeholder" data-wplink-edit="true">neck stiffness and pain</a>, one can experience visual disturbances, dizziness, and concentration issues.  Your whole quality of life can be negatively affected.</p>
<p>Tight muscles in the neck and shoulders often lead to tension headaches.  Avoiding neck pain and shoulder tightness may help reduce your headaches.</p>
<p>Sometimes the problem starts in the neck, and sometimes a headache sends pain to the neck, as well.</p>
<h4>When Was Your Last Meal?  &#8230; And What Did You Eat?</h4>
<p>Hunger can also be a cause of headaches.  As well, certain foods can be the cause of migraines.  Just one type of food could be the trigger or many foods.</p>
<h5>Common Food Triggers:</h5>
<ul>
<li>Onions</li>
<li>Dairy Products</li>
<li>Cheese</li>
<li>Chocolate</li>
<li>Beans</li>
<li>Nuts</li>
<li>Avocados</li>
<li>Bananas</li>
<li>Citrus</li>
</ul>
<p><a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/toxic-ingredients-in-processed-food/">Additives can also be problematic</a>.  Examine your diet.  Notice if there is something you are eating that might be causing your headaches.</p>
<h4>Drink a Glass of Water</h4>
<p>Dehydration can also cause headaches, so it&#8217;s important to stay hydrated.  Make sure you drink plenty of water throughout the day.</p>
<p>A common trigger of “migraines” and “cluster” headaches is alcohol, especially red wine.  Reduce or eliminate all alcohol consumption.</p>
<h4>Assess the Amount of Caffeine in Your Diet</h4>
<p>Caffeine causes blood vessels to constrict.  Without caffeine, the blood vessels get wider and bulge with each heartbeat causing migraines.  Should you decide to stop consuming beverages with caffeine, do it gradually.</p>
<h4>Get a Good Night&#8217;s Sleep</h4>
<p>Lack of sleep is a common trigger of tension headaches, and migraines.  Currently, the research cannot explain this seeming correlation.  What is known is that some people feel better after taking a nap.  What about you?</p>
<h4>Take Care of Your Eyes</h4>
<p>Overuse of technology can cause eye fatigue, which leads to muscle compression in the neck.  This compression of the muscles in the back of your head can trigger shooting headaches.  When looking at screens, consider wearing blue-tinted lenses in your glasses.  For a small cost, you can purchase over the counter glasses with a blue tint.</p>
<h4>Balancing, Meditation, Exercise and Yoga</h4>
<p>Balancing your system can reduce headaches.  Reduce stress through guided imagery and meditation.  Exercise and yoga will reduce stress and help keep your vascular system healthy.</p>
<p>Be mindful of your body alignment, especially when sitting.  Keep your head, neck, and shoulders back.  Align your ears over your shoulders over your hips with your chin level with the floor.  Stack your head over your spine for optimal alignment.</p>
<p><strong>Stretch often.</strong></p>
<p>Try yoga to minimize headaches.  It is one of the best, well-rounded practices that incorporates meditation for stress relief, stretching, and emphasizes optimal alignment.  A regular yoga practice not only reduces stress and improves sleep but incorporates lots of stretching.  Yoga poses reduce muscle tension and balance the body.</p>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><p>I checked in with the receptionist at my doctor’s office for a routine follow-up visit.  I was also asked the usual personal questions, the responses for which were overheard by the patient in line behind me … <em>including my birth date</em>.</p>
<p>When I stepped away from the desk, the man behind me said that he was “amazed.”  As we engaged in a conversation, he explained that we are the same age, but I look 20 years younger than he does.  He further explained his high degree of disbelief!  My life’s purpose is to help people, so I decided to explain <em>how I changed my life</em> to improve myself.</p></div>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><h2>It’s been a long journey to get to this point</h2>
<p>My physical journey to <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/what-affects-health-wellness/">overall wellness</a> was not the only journey.  There were other challenges, as well.  Losing the vision in my right eye was one.  Three doctors told me I would never regain my sight in that eye, and they were right!  It’s something that you learn to live with.</p></div>
			</div><div class="et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_65  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light">
				
				
				
				
				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><h2>The things I gave up&#8230;</h2>
<p>Fast forward ten years, and I discovered that I have some <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/toxic-ingredients-in-processed-food/">food allergies</a>.  This was when I decided to change the way I was eating by giving up sugar, chemicals, and white flour.  Yoga and meditation were already a part of my life.  The missing piece was to change my food choices.</p>
<p>Making these changes was one of my best decisions because it set the stage for improved health and started another journey, the <em>return of my vision</em>.  Yes, you read that right, my vision has returned.  Of course, the doctors denied that there was an improvement, but the eye chart doesn’t lie … <em>my eyesight has come back</em>.</p></div>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><h2>So what caused the improvement?</h2>
<p>My physicians will never know for sure, but I credit all the changes that I made to improve my <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/what-affects-health-wellness/">health and wellness</a> &#8211; <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/do-we-need-cardio-workouts/">exercise</a>, <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/why-practice-yoga/">yoga</a>, meditation, and the final piece, <a href="https://mindfulalignmentwithlinda.com/you-are-what-you-eat/"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">proper nutrition</span></a>.  I attribute my physical appearance to those changes as well.  Plus, I feel great, and that is the most important thing.  Looking 20 years younger is a nice compliment, but what is important is my health.  My goal is to be healthy for as long as possible and to help others do the same.</p></div>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><h2>How I found my motivation</h2>
<p>The blessing in disguise is that if I had not been injured in the first place, I probably would not have made all the changes. I often joke that my age is 100, but I feel 35. I am grateful that I am in a good place and can use what happened to motivate others.</p></div>
